![]() The next step is to spend time working on your skills. ![]() You’re familiar with what you’re getting yourself into and you’ve dabbled in the space. ![]() Otherwise, this could be a bad habit to develop for the future. Create a track from start to finish and don’t leave it incomplete. However, when creating your first song, remember one very important thing: finish music as quickly as you can. Take a few weeks to play around and perhaps even make your first song. Once you’ve got that down pat, spend some time playing around with the program. You can also search for beginner’s tutorials online. Pick up the user manual and get to know how it works so you can become familiar with the software quickly. Consider also looking into a MIDI keyboard.Īfter you settle on the DAW you want to use and purchase the program, don’t run full steam ahead quite yet. You’ll likely need a few more simple pieces of gear to begin producing, including a decent pair of headphones or studio monitors, as well as a laptop or desktop. Your experiments don’t need to sound good, though – remember, you’re not quite a master producer yet! We recommend checking out some YouTube video tutorials on how each work, give the programs a try and decide which feels best after you’ve spent some time experimenting with them. Keep in mind your budget and how much you’re willing to invest. ![]() If you have friends who are producers, ask them what they prefer and why – or if they have any software they advise against. The goal: test a few out and find one that you like. There are hundreds of these software products on the market. It’s one of the key elements to music production and, if you’re familiar with the space, you’ve likely heard some of the major names like Ableton, Cubase and Logic Pro. We know what you’re thinking: what’s a DAW? It stands for Digital Audio Workstation. You don’t need to know how to read music to become an electronic music producer, but we recommend spending a few hours looking into musical structure and the basics of how songs are made. Even though using a computer to make electronic music is not necessarily the same as picking up a guitar or sitting down at a piano, the general idea behind creating a song still remains the same. It’s a bit tricky to learn to make music without having a basic concept of music theory. Dig through Soundcloud, spend some time on electronic music news websites, check out the history of electronic music on YouTube. Get to know some of the big artists in your genre – for example, Skrillex in Dubstep or Seven Lions in Psytrance – and spend some time looking into basic elements that create various types of electronic music.Īs you are working to become an electronic music producer, you should absolutely become familiar with the DJs and producers who’ve pioneered the electronic music industry. We know you’re itching to create your first track, but be sure to cover these basic areas first.īecome familiar with the space that you’re entering. This stage typically takes a few months, during which you should not be afraid to explore, ask questions and get creative. You are entering a brand new environment and need to understand that environment before you can master it. You have to start somewhere, right? The beginning stage is about introducing yourself to the industry, its inner workings, the programs and the elements needed to learn to produce. This process is truly an evolution, but there are roughly five chapters that any producer moves through on their journey of learning and mastering the art:Įach of these stages is unique in their own way, and also vital to becoming a successful electronic music producer. What genre (or subgenre) of music do you want to create? What artists inspire you? How will you describe your sound – and what do you want that sound to be? Let’s be honest: becoming a producer takes time, effort, and exploration. So that leaves us all to question: How do you become an electronic music producer? With an endless list of sub-genres within the electronic music realm, the community of individuals that produce their own sound – from house and techno to trap, dubstep and beyond – continues to grow daily.īut don’t worry – the artists that have made this genre famous didn’t all just manifest their talents out of nowhere they learned their craft and refined their skills to become the producers that they are today. It also seems a little glitchy when you convert any document with artboards to CMYK. All the pre-sets are for web and app dimensions rather than paper sizes, which is not a major problem since you can simply set them manually, but it does feel like they weren’t factoring in the full breadth of Photoshop users when they designed this. Artboards really are all geared up for digital designers and not for those working in print. With that in mind, here is where this feature does fall a little short for me. ![]() For me, it’s more a place to keep references or my colour pallet within easy reach but I can see how this would be particularly brilliant if you’re a UI designer and are wanting to keep all your icons and buttons somewhere you can access easily to apply across your design. Thankfully, with artboards, it’s a simple drag and drop to pull a layer out from your artboard and into the margins. Not great when you’re looking for a particular layer in a hurry or wanting to compare a few things. ![]() Previously in Photoshop it had been a case of grouping these together and just turning off the visibility. On that note, naturally, since starting at emc I’ve been working a lot more with InDesign and one thing I have got used to, and have been missing in Photoshop, is the ability to keep layers and objects visible in the document but just move them off the canvas and into what we’d call the paste-up margin. Your artboards work a lot like a layer group with a clipping mask applied, so adding something to a particular board is as simple as dragging it into the group, with the added bonus of it clipping to the canvas without worrying about things spilling out onto the paste-up board. Very handy!Įverything feels very neat and tidy working in this way. If you were wanting to send these to a client at this point, there’s also a handy ‘quick export as png’ option that allows you to save out a whole artboard (or just your selected layers), in just a few clicks. Luckily, thanks to the new artboard feature, I can have all these options laid out neatly before me in one window! When it has come to directly comparing my options and ultimately deciding which would be best to take forward, it’s been a life saver. “I don’t know if its the same for all illustrators, but I’m pretty indecisive when I’m coming up with new ideas for a drawing, particularly if it’s a commission piece, I have compositional roughs and colour studies coming out of my ears! The main problem I’ve always had with working in photoshop is being able to compare several options at once without having to turn on and off layers, saving each image out, or open them all individually, tiling all my windows until my computer screen looks like an ill-fitting jigsaw puzzle. Kristina who’s one of our designers and a very fab illustrator, has had the chance to play around with this for little while now and gives us her thoughts… Perhaps they were waiting for their 25th year of Photoshop but either way we’re glad they’ve released this new update. However, the most recent update to Photoshop (CC 2015) is pretty immense – we wonder how long they’ve had this up their sleeve as it now parallel with the very useful pasteup boards in InDesign. Some of these updates pass us by and often are just little bug fixes.
